Who we are
Discovery Sciences is a multi-faceted department which drives early drug discovery across AstraZeneca’s global Research & Development portfolio. The successful candidate will be located at AstraZeneca’s vibrant R&D site in Cambridge, UK and will be part of Mechanistic Biology and Profiling, a team where we collaborate to support projects aiming to impact the lives of our patients. We are responsible for the generation of data that drives the chemistry in our projects as well as bespoke mechanism-of-action information studies in support of the Oncology, Cardiovascular and Renal Disease, Respiratory, Inflammation & Immunology and Neuroscience portfolios.
What you’ll do
In this laboratory-based position, you will deliver in vitro pharmacology and cell biology data to drug discovery projects to support both profiling and mechanism of action studies. You will be comfortable working as part of a cross functional team to interpret data and determine next steps to drive projects forwards. Your passion to follow the science will enable delivery of our exciting portfolio.
Examples of typical tasks
- Deliver in vitro cellular profiling and mechanism of action data to drug discovery protects in support of both safety and efficacy.
- Working as part of a cross functional team to interpret data and agree next steps to drive projects forwards.
- Designing, performing and interpreting experiments to generate detailed mechanism-of-action studies for lead compounds.
- Interaction across a broad range of therapeutic projects with the opportunity to represent the group at project team meetings.
- Furthering your personal scientific visibility through internal and external presentations and publications.
- Developing and evaluating new models to support both early-stage in vitro safety and efficacy pharmacology.
Essential for the role
Our team is a highly collaborative group, working to deliver both profiling and mechanistic data so the ability to combine delivery as well as bespoke experimental design, with a goal-oriented focused approach is crucial to be successful in the role.
- Formal training and proven expertise (PhD + postdoc, or equivalent experience) in in vitro pharmacology, cell biology or a related setting with a sincere passion for science
- Cellular biology and pharmacology techniques applied to compound profiling and mechanism of action studies
- Future orientated with a desire to drive scientific and technical innovation
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Proven external reputation in in vitro pharmacology & cellular biology gained through external presentation and publications in peer reviewed journals
Desirable for the role
- Experience developing automated processes to deliver cellular data such as: high content imaging, flow cytometry or FLIPR
- An understanding of the drug discovery process (either pharma or CRO) OR of working in an academic lab that has strong links with drug discovery
