Our client is seeking a Lead Network Engineer and Architect who will lead the development, support and management of telecoms and network products and services deployed on behalf of the University, participate in continuous improvement analysis and design, as well as the development of telecom and network-based solutions.


The post holder is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, repair and ongoing support of the voice communications and data network, capacity planning, service availability and continuity. They will adhere to service levels and all operational processes (such as incident, problem, change management processes) pertaining to network services. They will need to provide an expert level of support for the systems that they look after, actively planning the implementation of patches and upgrades in order to ensure that network systems are efficient, effective and secure.


Key responsibilities


  • Through awareness of the needs of the organisation, works with both IT leadership team and key stakeholders to promote the benefits that a common approach to information and communications technology deployment will bring
  • Coordinates the promotion, acquisition, development, and implementation of information systems and services in close liaison with those responsible for management and strategy.
  • Develop technical strategies and reference technical architecture for the network infrastructure, exploiting modern technology, drawing on knowledge of industry best practice, and contributing towards the overall IT technical strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage the data network to provide value, including leading in the development of smart technologies to improve experience.
  • Proactively contribute to the continual improvements of IT processes, procedures, quality of support and statistical information, and working practices within the team and IT services.
  • Supports monitoring of the external environment and assessment of emerging technologies to evaluate the potential impacts, threats and opportunities. Contributes to the creation of reports, technology road mapping and the sharing of knowledge and insights.


Essential selection criteria -


  • Demonstrable working experience with Cisco (Switching and Routing) networking equipment and currently hold an up-to-date version of the appropriate certification. Minimum of CCNA, desirable with CCNP
  • A workable understanding of Software Defined Networking technologies to achieve Network segmentation
  • Specific Cisco technologies (Cisco Secure Workload SDA/ ACI / DNAC / ISE)
  • Cloud Networking (AWS / Azure) with an understanding of inter-site connection techniques such as ExpressRoute/Direct connect/VPN gateways
  • An understanding of new cloud-based networking techniques including but not limited to: Secure access service edge
  • Good knowledge of security gateways, experience of Firewall management and configuration Cisco Firepower

  • Requirement to work on call in order to facilitate the 24*7 support demands of a global organisation
  • Ability to work flexibly and extended hours by agreement to meet tight, fixed deadlines or as required by service imperatives
  • Desirable – The ability to speak and/or write in Welsh
