Your new company
This Facilities Management business is a leading Partner for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), managing and maintaining the Defence Training Estate (DTE). With a new 10-year contract commencing in 2024 they are at the forefront of delivering exceptional services. Their Information and Technology Department is crucial in supporting our mission by delivering, supporting, and maintaining all user-facing IT services, enabling their team to excel in their roles.

They are undertaking a Digital Transformation impacting their entire IT department and are hiring a number of key roles as part of this process. Central to this is a Solutions Architect position (with a background in Software Development).

The IT team is 50 strong and the business has over 120 sites so you will have the opportunity to travel and understand each site, though the head office location is North of Salisbury and you would be expected to spend some time here so must have a driving license due to the remote location.

Your new role

You’ll be joining as an experienced Solutions Architect that has progressed from a Microsoft .Net background with Azure Cloud experience. You will work alongside 1 other SA and report into the Head of Architecture and Engineering and will manage the evolution of the Enterprise Architecture within a secure / MOD style environment. In addition as part of a small team exposure to other architecture domains including Business, Applications, Data, Integration and Infrastructure would be useful.

The role does not have any direct reports, you are more responsible for shaping the strategy of the architecture roadmap and leading on solutions designs, along with key input into technology suggestions and liaising with stakeholders internally. The role will be 70% Technical and 30% Stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills will be heavily assessed.

You will ensure you and others follow architecture governance, guidelines, standards, best-practices and agreed designs/patterns. You will Develop and communicate architectural artefacts that guide development, test and implementation (e.g. Architecture Impact Assessment, Solution Design Decision).

The team run Agile and you’ll be encouraged to reinforce and embed these practices. Also a migration to the cloud is definitely on the roadmap so experience with moving from on-prem to Azure would be useful.

What you'll need to succeed
Their stack is heavily centred around Microsoft so you’ll have likely progressed from a .Net background. This is supported by several Off The Shelf systems including IBM Maximo, Dynamics, ESRI ArcGIS, and SharePoint so a broad coverage across these would be great.

Ideally you’ll have knowledge of Enterprise Architecture methodologies (i.e. TOGAF, COBIT) and use of EA tools (e.g. Sparx EA, Orbus, LeanIX).

Deep understanding of architectural styles (e.g. 2-Tier, 3-Tier, Microservice Architecture).

Deep understanding of Architectural Patterns and when and where to apply them (e.g. Saga, API Gateway). Experience of modelling languages like ArchiMate / UML.

You will be skilled at structured problem solving, and not intimidated by large and complex problems. Able to analyse & break down problems, solving them piece by piece while keeping sight of the overall ‘big picture’.

What you'll get in return
You’ll get access to industry leading training/certifications, good pension, free parking and working alongside some highly experienced and talented colleagues to share knowledge (which is actively encouraged). There’s also great opportunity to accumulate high holiday through their annual leave policy and Christmas shut down period.
