Job Purpose

The Senior Manager, ESG role will be responsible for the implementation of the Bank’s approach to Environment Social and Governance (ESG) risk and opportunity management. UKIB is different to other financial institutions: in having a triple bottom line; being focused on new infrastructure assets; investing in the UK protected by its regulation and law; and in working with projects and partners early in their development. They are looking for an ESG manager that can navigate this unique context to add value to UKIB’s investments. The role will also involve collaboratively leading a multidisciplinary team of analysts and sector specialists to provide trusted technical ESG analysis and deal assessments across a range of infrastructure sectors. Ultimately, the measure of success for this role is to ensure that ESG is integrated into the Bank’s operations and is a core part of its DNA, in a way that supports UKIB’s objectives.

Core role accountabilities

  • Provide valued and specialist expertise on ESG in an infrastructure context both internally and externally, drawing on your own expert knowledge and experience and through strong networks and relationships. Identify connections between complex ESG considerations and UKIB’s investment in private market developments and lending to Local Authorities. This includes consulting across and beyond the bank, building the capability of impact team members to deliver projects.
  • Implement the Bank’s approach to ESG management in support of its strategic objectives as well as associated investment strategy, this includes Cross-Bank working to embed ESG into all operations. It means working closely with risk management and finance colleagues to implement the recommendations of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosure. Provide technical support on carbon accounting and infrastructure specific ESG standards.
  • Build close trusted relationships, effective communications and support a proactive approach to building ESG capacity and capability across the Bank. This includes nurturing external networks and sharing knowledge of the latest professional and other relevant developments.
  • Take responsibility for and provide assurance on ESG aspects of due diligence on transactions. This includes supporting the Impact team to provide sectoral ESG knowledge and assessing climate risks at an asset level. Ensuring the team support the Bank’s investment committee with perspectives from the market and proactive connections to industry practice.
  • Provide inclusive leadership and train a high-performing multidisciplinary team of specialists, helping to attract, develop and retain high-performing talent and expertise. Support them to connect ESG issues in an open, constructive and collaborative manner with senior colleagues across the Bank

Knowledge, Skill and Experience requirements

  • Experience of delivering ESG capability and functions in financial institutions, particularly.
    • Experience in sustainability, ESG, financial analysis of infrastructure, low carbon or social impact investments.
    • Understanding the application of developing regulatory and market standards in financial institutions e.g. TCFD, ISSB, carbon accounting
    • Knowledge of future direction of travel in the ESG space and what this could mean for the Bank and its future investments.
  • Knowledge and expertise in ESG (depth and breadth), both in:
    • Understanding the technical requirements of regulatory and other market defined ESG frameworks, e.g. TCFD, ISSB, and incoming SDR requirements.
    • ESG in an infrastructure context in the UK, particularly understanding of asset level risks, standards and metrics e.g. in assessing physical climate risks or applying SASB or GRESB guidelines to infrastructure.
  • Experience of providing ESG advice within a financial or governmental environment.
    • Experience of building capacity of others in developing ESG expertise in a nurturing and inclusive way.
    • Trusted to engage with and influence senior partners, creating and nurturing strategic relationships. Proven ability to work with, influence, and navigate stakeholders, including commercial partners, academia or government departments
    • Be a skilled communicator, both in writing and in person, great listener and be passionate about contributing to the positive culture of the organisation.

Professional skills and Qualifications

  • Must hold a 2:2 degree or above, in subject with a significant quantitative element, including economics, environmental management, operational research, social research and data analytics or equivalent experience.
  • Professional qualifications in finance or analysis, or part-qualification e.g. Chartered Financial Analyst, ESG certificates will be beneficial
