My name is William Plom, I am a Senior Manager with Hays in our Norwich branch and currently specialise in Senior Finance recruitment across Norfolk, as well as managing our Norwich office.

I started at Hays as a Trainee Consultant straight after University and hadn’t considered a career in recruitment before a friend recommended Hays. Throughout the last decade here I have worked across a number of different sectors and have enjoyed rising to new challenges throughout my time. I have covered a range of desks in my time including Business Support, HR and Construction & Property but have spent the majority of my career recruiting within Accountancy & Finance both across Norfolk and the East of England.

In my 10 years at Hays I have achieved 5 promotions and am on track for a 6^th but that is only the half of it. Hays has given me the opportunity to continually develop. It was made clear to me that there are several pathways for successful consultants, whether that be focused on client engagement, leading a specialism, people management or even moving within central services. I have been given the opportunity to manage a small team which turned into a bigger team and now an office, seeing it grow to record breaking levels and helping start new specialist areas of recruitment in the region. One of the key reasons I have stayed with Hays is the genuine opportunity to progress. It isn’t on my agenda but if you want to then you are able to move to different locations around the world.

At Hays the primary focus is always sales, but with sales comes the benefits of fun incentives with likeminded people. Within 2 months of joining Hays I was lucky enough to be included in an all expenses paid overnight trip to London as part of a regional incentive that Norwich had won. We had a champagne breakfast on the train, visited the Shard (with a bit more bubbly), a great meal out and a stay in a swanky hotel. That was the beginning – There are always incentives for you to be a part of whether that is the EOE Excellence club that happens once a quarter, where I have done some amazing things like visit restaurants I would never have gone to (like the gherkin), fun activities like virtual clay pigeon shooting, actual clay pigeon shooting, crazy golf, life-size monopoly and more. We have 2 regional or national events each year that are always great fun – a Christmas do and a summer conference. However, the pinnacle is being invited on Hays Elite – a yearly trip for all the top performers from each region. I was lucky enough to go to Iceland for a 4 day trip seeing and doing some incredible things, starting with a visit to the amazing Sky Lagoon spa. We visited the waterfalls, geysers and glaciers on the golden circle, went off roading in super jeeps, went quad biking on the black sand beaches, ate in some of the finest restaurants and went clubbing in Reykjavic. It was a truly unforgettable experience

Day to day I enjoy talking to people and feeling that the conversations I have genuinely impact those people’s lives. Whether that is finding someone a short term role to see them through a sticky situation, finding someone their permanent dream job or working with a client to recruit someone that transforms their business – the decisions we make can make a massive difference. I am proud to work for a business that differentiates itself from other recruiters by striving to be more than just recruiters. We can offer more insight and analysis and have a higher level of conversation that supports businesses and the people that drive them. More than all of that I love the people I work with – in 10 years I have met some incredible people who have an infectious positivity, always leaving me feeling better for having a short conversation.
