TRADES AND LABOUR JOBS FAQs

Yes – trades and labour jobs are a great career choice for many reasons. The earning opportunities can see good tradespeople earning £50,000 – and even beyond – a year. The industry is growing, so there’s a high demand for labour. You can select which field to specialise in according to what you enjoy most. And there are guaranteed career progression opportunities, which you can achieve while still being paid.

Trades and labour jobs are usually paid an hourly rate, which varies according to the skillset and your experience and qualifications. For example, a plumber or electrician can be paid anywhere between £30–£60 per hour, while a carpenter is typically paid between £20–£40 per hour.

There are several routes into trades and labour roles. You can either complete a relevant college course – such as a Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills. You can select an apprenticeship. Or you can apply directly for an entry-level role if you don’t have any qualifications or experience.

Increasingly, we are working with and supporting companies who are actively embracing apprenticeship and other training schemes.

Regardless of the role, most employers will require you to hold a valid and relevant CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card and you may be asked to complete some online awareness training. Check the individual job posts for details.
