Work in the drug safety profession involves detecting, evaluating, understanding, and preventing the adverse effects of drugs. The job also includes assessing the risk and benefits of medicines to ensure they are safe to use.

The qualifications required for a pharmacovigilance and drug safety job are a pharmaceutical, medical or life sciences degree. In some cases, further qualifications in project management or a master’s degree in drug safety are required. If you are a qualified health professional, such as a nurse or a pharmacist, with suitable medical qualifications, then it’s possible to enter the area of pharmacovigilance and drug safety through this route. 

The key skills needed for drug safety jobs include excellent communication (both written and verbal), analytical, problem-solving, mathematics, project management and IT skills. Observation skills and attention to detail are also very important to ensure accuracy in your work, especially as incorrect information can have serious health and safety consequences. Drug safety and pharmacovigilance roles both involve collating and reporting on the adverse effects of drugs for pharmaceutical companies.
